What are myofascial release techniques?

Myofascial release techniques are, powerful soft tissue diagnostic and treatment techniques used to manage problems involving muscles, ligament, connective tissue, and nerves (soft tissue).  Headaches, muscle strains, recurrent muscle pain, tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, plantar fasciitis, knee pain and shoulder problems are but a few of the many conditions we treat using these procedures.

Who can benefit from these treatment?

Our training and experience has allowed us to treat a broad range of injuries and conditions.  These include:  athletic injuries, people injured due to work place or motor vehicle accidents, and people who develop pain throughout their normal daily activities.

Common conditions treated with these techniques are listed to the right.

What causes the problem and why is the treatment effective?
Muscles and soft tissues can be affected in the following ways resulting in pain and dysfunction:
  • Acute injuries such muscle strains, ligamentous sprains and contusions (from a direct blow).
  • Overuse which results in microtears within the tissue (repetitive strain injuries, overuse injuries in athletes).
  • Tension/tightness in muscle which leads to a net decrease in oxygen to the muscle (hypoxia).
The result of this situation is the production and infiltration of tough fibrous scar tissue known as fibrous adhesions.  Fibrous adhesions do not allow the muscles to move, stretch or glide over other muscles and nerves as they should.  The result is continued tightness, pain, weakness and altered biomechanics.  If nerves become trapped, you may experience numbness and tingling in the extremities. This situation has been described as having muscles stuck together with Velcro.

Releasing and eliminating these adhesions is what makes soft tissue techniques successful.

Do soft tissue treatments hurt and how long does it take?
If any discomfort is experienced with this treatment, it is usually described as a ‘good hurt’.  In many cases, patients report significant improvement after one treatment.  The length of time required to eliminate the problem or reach “maximum therapeutic benefit” varies.  Some conditions resolve vary quickly (within several visits) while others can take significantly longer.
